Self-Taught Chef Recognised at Prestigious Care Industry Awards

A Salutem employee with just 18 months of being a professional chef has been named the Care Home Chef of the year at the South West Great British Care Awards.

The Great British Care Awards are a series of regional events throughout the UK and are a celebration of excellence across the care sector. The awards pay tribute to individuals who have demonstrated outstanding work within their field.

Matthew Kavanagh, 52, and now a chef at Kanner project in Plymouth, was nominated for the award following recognition for his compassionate approach to cooking.

The South West service, which predominantly provides care for adults living with autism, took Matthew on board in the latter stages of the pandemic, where he eventually became head chef at the facility.

With a dedication to supporting people in care, Matthew often involves the individuals supported by the service when cooking and preparing their meals. This gives them the confidence they need in the kitchen, before leaving the facility to live independently.

His care for others can be traced back to his days as a pre-school teacher in Cambodia, where he worked for two years before joining the Kanner project in Plymouth, where he initially worked as a support worker.

Matthew Kavanagh, chef at Salutem said:
“I am delighted to have received this award, especially as I have only been a chef for the past 18 months.
“Since working at Kanner House I have developed a close bond with the individuals living at the facility, who love getting involved with the cooking and can now make excellent full English breakfasts!”

John Godden MBE, CEO at Salutem said:
“We are very proud Matthew for receiving the award and representing everyone at Salutem.
“Matthew’s career journey is truly remarkable with his experience of working in several industries showing in the quality of work that is being delivered in the kitchen.”
