Promoting Health And Wellbeing In Birmingham

BirminghamLast month local housing and care provider Midland Heart treated their customers to a wellbeing day at the Irish Centre in Digbeth. The event brought together customers from across Birmingham who live in supported accommodation to enjoy a bit of pampering, receive free health checks and get useful tips and information on how to improve their wellbeing.

Some of the activities on offer included Thai Chi, hand waxing, healthy food demos, a caricaturist artist and fun and games.

Midland Heart customer, Paul McVeigh, who volunteered at the event said: “I have really enjoyed getting everyone involved and sharing my creative skills. It feels really good to do something rewarding. This event has been good for my wellbeing and my mental health”.

Alan Jephcott, Resident Involvement Manager at Midland Heart said: “We’ve had a great day working with local partners to promote the importance of wellbeing. I’ve seen so many smiles from our visitors who enjoyed the activities and found the information really helpful”.

The event was a great success with 100 health checks being completed which flagged up 10 new instances of high blood pressure or blood sugar in younger people. Those identified were given advice and referred to their GP to follow up.

Local partners Fircroft College, Health and Nutritional team, Mind, Birmingham City Council Wellbeing Service and Health Watch were on hand to offer helpful information and advice.

The wellbeing day was delivered as part of Midland Hearts’ Magic Moments scheme which supports their customers with activity-based events that will help meet your social, emotional, physical and intellectual needs.
