Chorleywood Manor Residents Complete Ten Bridges Walk, Raising £3,082 for Parkinson’s UK

Residents, family members, team members and volunteers from Chorleywood Manor Care Home in Rickmansworth completed London’s Ten Bridges Walk on 5th June to raise funds for Parkinson’s UK.

15 team members, four volunteers and five residents from the care home, including two residents living with Parkinson’s, came together to raise more than £3,082 for the charity.

Among those who took part were residents Helga and Eileen, who are both living with Parkinson’s. Resident Jill, who has previously done charity walks at the home, joined the walk in memory of her husband Michael, who lived with Parkinson’s, while Eileen was accompanied by her husband Charles.

Residents Margaret and Lynne also took part in the challenge alongside team members and volunteers.

What began as a small team effort has grown into a major annual event for the care home, who first took part in a charity walk in 2022, and then in 2023, six team members completed the Ten Bridges walk in London and raised £1,127 for charity.

The following year, residents joined the event for the first time, with 10 team members and two residents raising £4,125 for charity. And last year, five residents took part in a walk supporting Great Ormond Street Hospital Charity, a cause close to their hearts, which raised £3,800.
In preparation for the walk, residents from Chorleywood Manor took part in daily exercise sessions at the home. Wheelchair access was available throughout the route to ensure residents could participate comfortably. One resident, who completed the walk with her son, had prepared by walking around the home’s community gardens each day in the lead-up to the event.

Home Manager at Chorleywood Manor Care Home, Fiona Kazaza, commented on the event, sharing, “We are proud of everyone who took part in this year’s walk. Supporting Parkinson’s UK was important to many of our residents, particularly those whose lives have been affected by the condition.

“Our residents’ health and well-being are our top priority. We enjoy offering them the opportunities to participate in meaningful activities such as charity walks. The overall morale at Chorleywood Manor could best be described as excited anticipation among the residents. Jill has been on previous walks with us, but Charles, Eileen, Lynne, Margaret, and Helga are all new to this. It is so special to be sharing this opportunity with them.”

Michelle Henderson, Community Fundraiser – East of England at Parkinson’s UK, said, “We are so grateful to all the brilliant residents, staff and volunteers at Chorleywood Manor Care Home for taking part in this incredible challenge for Parkinson’s UK.

“Parkinson’s is a complex brain condition that gets worse over time. Affecting 166,000 people in the UK, it has more than 40 symptoms, from tremor and pain to anxiety, and there is currently no cure.

“On behalf of everyone at Parkinson’s UK, thank you to Chorleywood Manor and especially its residents Charles, Eileen, Margaret, Lynne, Helga, and Jill for making such a meaningful difference.”
