Local Care Home Celebrates World Senior Citizens Day
There were smiles all around at Hazel Lodge care home as staff and residents came together to celebrate World Senior Citizens Day on August 21.
World Senior Citizens Day is celebrated in many countries across the globe to honour the contributions older people have made to their families, communities and society. Former President of the US, Ronald Reagan, officially founded the World Senior Citizens’ Day after he had signed a proclamation on August 19th, 1988.
The day aims to raise awareness of the challenges older people may face, including health concerns and social isolation, while celebrating the lasting impact the older generation bring to society.
To mark the occasion the home hosted a Young at Heart party for residents and their families, with everybody including staff hitting the dance floor to the very talented entertainer Steve Dunnett.
Residents put on their dancing shoes and shared memories of going to dance halls and discos and commenting on how music has changed over the years.
Rikki-Gene Bury, General Manager at the home, said: “Everyone at Hazel Lodge was keen to get involved in World Senior Citizens Day celebrations. It was really nice to see residents , staff and family members having such a great time and proving you maybe senior but you’re never too old to dance.”
