Magnificent Kelpies Leave Care Home Residents in Awe

Residents at Preston House Care Home in Glenrothes were left speechless by The Kelpies, the famous pair of 30-metre-high statues depicting the mystical shape-shifting water spirits of Scottish folklore.

Completed in 2013, the majestic sculptures mark the entrance to the Forth and Clyde canal, once one of the most important maritime routes in the world.

Horsepower lay at the heart of that trade, as they pulled barges along the canal and tilled the fields. The artist, Andy Scott, pays homage to that legacy in his work.

It was a fantastic day out in the sun for staff and residents and they enjoyed a picnic and ice-cream at the Falkirk-based project.

The trip was organised as part of a weekly programme of activities put on by the care home. Preston House, which is part of the Holmes Care Group, is always looking to provide residents with opportunities to stay happy and healthy.

Jean Andersen, resident at Preston House Care Home said:
“My Pa used to tell us stories about kelpies, but I never thought I’d really see one. He made them sound scary, but I had it eating out of the palm my hand.”

Donna Dunsire, Lifestyle Activities Coordinator at Preston House said:
“Residents had a wonderful day out at the Kelpies, the sculptures were remarkable and there was plenty of sun and smiles for our picnic!”
