Team Colten Celebrates Carnival Samba-Style

carnivalResidents at four care homes run by family-owned Colten Care made their mark Rio-style at this summer’s Lymington Carnival.

They were among a 60-strong team, alongside carers, activities staff, families and children, who featured in the procession or watched from a VIP viewing area at the Town Hall.

Reflecting the Carnival themes of sport and forthcoming games, the Team Colten walkers were resplendent in an array of athletics, equestrian, water sports, cycling and gymnastics kits.

The taste of Brazil was completed by a specially decorated sailboat offered a distinctive take on those five famous sporting hoops. Giant rings represented each of Colten Care’s five company values: kind, friendly, individual, reassuring and honest.

The homes involved in the parade were Linden House, Belmore Lodge and Court Lodge in Lymington and Woodpeckers in Brockenhurst.

Preparations had been under way for months to choose materials for costumes, decide different colours for each home and make outfits, flags, flower arrangements, feathers and jewellery.

Janie Pearman, Belmore Lodge Home Manager and head of the Colten Care parade team, said: “Everyone really got into the excitement, camaraderie and samba vibe of the day. It was fantastic to give our residents the chance to enjoy the Carnival. It’s an event that many will have experienced before and by getting involved once again they continue feeling and being part of the community. This opportunity came about because of our partnership with the Lions Club, who organise the Carnival, and our shared commitment to supporting community life.”

Janie added: “For those residents who didn’t actually take part in the procession, we provided the best seats in the house by giving them exclusive use of a raised verge by the town hall with tea, coffee and homemade cupcakes served by our catering team. It was a safe haven away from the hustle and bustle of the street, so they could enjoy it comfortably.”

Resident Jim Giles took part in the parade accompanied by his partner Charlotte. She said: “For residents such as Jim it makes an enjoyable break and a chance to be part of an event, using his nifty wheelchair skills alongside everyone else. Colten Care’s delicious cakes were a welcome elevenses treat and, as always, all of the staff worked so hard in such hot weather keeping everyone safe and having fun. We enjoyed everything, right down to seeing our pug dog Ruby in her tutu! To take part was such a huge pleasure.”
