Boroughbridge Manor Marks Onam with Colourful Pookalam Celebration

Boroughbridge Manor, a care home in Boroughbridge, recently came together to celebrate Onam, the vibrant ten-day harvest festival celebrated in Kerala, India.

Residents, relatives and staff joined forces for the occasion, taking part in the creation of a beautiful Pookalam — a traditional circular floral design that lies at the heart of Onam celebrations.

Throughout the festival, families across Kerala create these intricate arrangements using freshly gathered flowers, and the Boroughbridge Manor community embraced the tradition wholeheartedly, working together to design and lay out their own colourful display.

The event proved to be a wonderful opportunity for everyone at the home to learn more about the customs and history behind Onam, while enjoying some quality time together.

Jodie Muir Activities Lead at Boroughbridge Manor, said: “This has been a huge amount of fun, and our residents, colleagues and relatives all enjoyed finding out the history of Onam and the Pookalam.”

One resident was equally enthusiastic about the day, saying: “The flowers were absolutely beautiful, and the time and patience it took to make the Pookalam was amazing!”
