Spring COVID-19 Booster Rollout Begins to Protect Vulnerable Residents

Millions of older people and those most at risk from serious illness are being urged to take up the latest spring COVID-19 vaccination, as the NHS begins its seasonal booster campaign across England.

From this week, tens of thousands of appointments are available at GP surgeries and community pharmacies, targeting those aged 75 and over, residents in care homes, and individuals with weakened immune systems.

Health leaders are reminding care providers and families that COVID-19 remains a year-round threat, particularly within residential and nursing settings where residents are more susceptible to severe illness and hospitalisation.

According to the NHS, immunity from previous vaccinations can diminish over time, while new variants of the virus continue to circulate. As a result, topping up protection is considered essential for those at greatest risk.

The renewed vaccination push follows findings highlighted during the ongoing UK COVID-19 Inquiry. In a report published on 16 April 2026, chaired by Baroness Heather Hallett, one study estimated that COVID-19 vaccines had prevented approximately 475,000 deaths across England and Scotland by March 2023.

Eligible individuals do not need to wait for an invitation to book their vaccination. Appointments can be arranged via the NHS website, the NHS App, by calling 119, or by attending designated walk-in sites.

Caroline Temmink, Director of Vaccination at the NHS, emphasised the importance of maintaining protection:

“While the arrival of warmer weather may make winter illnesses feel less immediate, COVID-19 continues to circulate and can still pose a serious risk to vulnerable people.

“Protection from previous doses can fade, so it is vital that those eligible come forward promptly. You don’t need to wait for an invitation—booking is quick and straightforward.”
