Secrets To A Long Life From One Of Stockport’s Oldest People
Eat well, live well and laugh are the secrets to a long life, according to one of Stockport’s oldest females who reached the magnificent milestone of 100 years old yesterday, Thursday 30 May 2024.
A resident at Cheadle Manor Care Centre on Stockport Road in Cheadle, Elsie Shackcloth is a vibrant, quick witted and fun lady and was delighted to receive her message of congratulations from The King and The Queen Consort next week.
Very much part of the home’s wonderful family of staff and residents, Elsie continues to enjoy every day to the fullest and, as Cheadle Manor’s first resident to celebrate their 100th birthday, the team planned a day to remember filled with love, laughter, fun and a party with her family and friends.
Central to the day’s celebrations was a 100th birthday cake, complete with candles, a buffet with all of Elsie’s favourite cakes, including music, banners, balloons and a room filled with love.
Home manager at Cheadle Manor, Helen Hartley, said:
“To our knowledge, Elsie is the oldest female living in Stockport, and she is our first centenarian at Cheadle Manor. Still incredibly alert, she is still taking part in our wellbeing activities, watching television in the lounge and eating with fellow residents. It’s incredible to make this milestone and we were determined to mark the occasion in style!
“More than just a birthday, this has been a whole month of celebrations for Elsie,” continued Helen, “But she thoroughly deserves it, it’s an amazing celebration of a life well lived and will continue to spoil her!”
So, what is the secret to a long life according to Elsie? She says:
“I remember my dad owning his own greengrocers called Albert Haynes in Crumpsall and throwing me and my brother an apple every morning before we left for school every morning. In those days, an apple was like gold dust, and with him running the fresh fruit and vegetables business we were around good food and always able to eat well. So that’s my secret, live well and eat well – oh, and don’t forget to laugh along the way! Reaching your 100th birthday is like breaking a record in sport and have enjoyed celebrating!”
