Railway 200 Stands With Alzheimer’s Research For A Cure

Railway 200, a new campaign to celebrate 200 years of the modern railway, announced Alzheimer’s Research UK as its charity partner.
The celebration will last for one year, aiming to raise £200,000 for five charities – Alzheimer’s Research UK, Railway Mission, Railway Benefit Fund, Railway Children, and Transport Benevolent Fund CIO.

Working collaboratively, the charities will host a variety of anniversary-related activities and events throughout 2025 to raise funds for their good causes and to protect railway memories.

Railway 200’s Programme Manager, Emma Robertson, describes the unique partnership as a meaningful collaboration. “Next year’s bicentenary is about bringing people together to celebrate rail’s role in national life and its amazing railway family.”

Robertson explains that nostalgia plays a big part in rail’s history.

Railway 200 will be working with Alzheimer’s Research UK and their rail charity partners to build a better future, helping to protect rail memories for everyone, forever.

The partnership aims to take people down a memory lane of cherished rail moments nationwide, including Alzheimer’s Research UK’s own employees.

Philip Dunn, the charity’s Executive Director, was born and raised in County Durham, which forms part of the Stockton and Darlington Railway route. This was where the first passenger train in modern history began its journey.

“This is a personally meaningful partnership for me. My hometown has a strong connection to the railway, so I have many fond childhood memories that link back to it.”

He adds: “Sadly, dementia puts precious memories like these at risk. We’re working to change this and we’re thankful to Railway 200 for standing with us for a cure.”
