Powys Schoolchildren Celebrate National Storytelling Week With Care Home Residents

A group of primary school children from Brecon joined residents at a local dementia care facility as part of an intergenerational partnership during National Storytelling Week.

Year 3 pupils at Llanfaes Primary School visited Trenewydd care home to read stories to residents as part of the awareness week organised by the Society for Storytelling.

Louise Williams, activity coordinator at the Shaw-operated care home said: “We were delighted to celebrate National Storytelling Week with our younger guests from Llanfaes.

“There are multiple benefits of intergenerational partnerships for the elderly, from combatting loneliness to boosting an individual’s mood. Our residents at Trenewydd had a wonderful day and thoroughly enjoyed reading and socialising with the children.”

Year 3 teacher at Llanfaes Primary School, Lettie Francis, added: “Visiting residents at the care home this week was a fantastic experience for our children.

“It was evident that these intergenerational partnerships have a real value to pupils. Reading with elderly residents obviously improves reading and writing skills, but it also helps to increase children’s confidence and overall social interaction with those outside of their social circle.”
