Local Care Home Opens Its Doors For Festive Lunch To Help Combat Loneliness

Ebor Court care home in York hosted a community Christmas lunch this week for local older people who may be lonely or isolated.  It is estimated that for 17% of older people, contact with family, friends and neighbours is less than once a week, and this is especially difficult during the Christmas period.  Ebor Court therefore invited those who may feel alone to join their residents to enjoy some quality time with likeminded people, participating in good old conversation and fun activities.

Regional Director, Allison Boyle, said, “We are aware of what a huge issue loneliness is at any time of year, but it is particularly sad when older people feel alone at Christmas time.  We wanted to do something for the local community and thought a festive Christmas lunch would be great fun.  We had loads going on, festive food, activities, a jolly singalong!  Our residents loved it and we are pleased to play our part in helping the wider loneliness issue.”

As well as the lunch, the home provided an opportunity for visitors to participate with the residents in various activities and there was entertainment from a choir singing festive carols.  Mavis Robson, who has lived at Ebor Court for over a year, said “It was wonderful.  We sung lots of Christmas carols, ones that we all knew.  It was the best party yet, I think everybody enjoyed it, and the mince pies too!”.
