Covid Helps North Yorkshire Disability Charity Recruit More Staff In Two Months Than Over Previous Two Years

The coronavirus pandemic has provided a surprising benefit for a North Yorkshire disability charity.

Over the last two months, Disability Action Yorkshire has been able to recruit more front-line staff than it had been previously able to do over the last two years.

And, in addition to the boost in employee numbers, it has also been inundated with requests from people keen to volunteer both at its Claro Road care home and at its Hornbeam Park training centre and furniture enterprise.

Disability Action Yorkshire Chief Executive Jackie Snape said: “One thing coronavirus did was to shine a light on the care sector, and in particular the staff working within it. They have become the nation’s superheroes.

“As a result, the amount of people now wanting to work in the industry is quite extraordinary. We have been able to recruit more staff in the last two months than we were able to in the last two years.

“It has also helped give a shot in the arm to Harrogate’s voluntary sector too, with a rise in the number of enquiries from people wanting to become volunteers.

“There’s some really good people out there, and the way they came together during the pandemic to form community groups – making PPE, delivering food or simply looking in on neighbours – is testament to this.”

Jackie added: “With life starting to return to normal, I hope this community spirit continues well into the future.

“Coronavirus has taught how vital the care industry is, and how millions of people rely on the support – and friendship – of its paid employees and those who give up a few hours a week in a voluntary capacity.”
