Braintree Carers Brave the Shave for Charity

braveshaverTwo dedicated carers St Mary’s Court care home in Bocking took the selfless and courageous step of shaving their hair to raise over £1,000 for Macmillan Cancer Research.

On 20 September Yasmin Grey and Dawn Potter chose to join the thousands of people across the country that have taken part in the charity’s Brave the Shave campaign which has already raised over £3 million.

Dawn said: “Cancer took my mother’s life and I wanted to do something for someone else. By shaving my hair off for Macmillan I know I’ll be making a difference.”

Yasmin said: “My grandad was my world and when he passed away due to cancer it had a massive effect on me and my family, so by doing this I have helped to raise money to find a cure for this horrible disease.

“I’ve also chosen to donate my hair to the Little Princess Trust so wigs can be made for children who have lost their own hair through cancer treatments.”

Another reason that Yasmin and Dawn chose to wave goodbye to their locks was because of Vonnie, a member of the care homes’ Activities Team, who has recently been diagnosed with terminal cancer.

Yasmin said: “Vonnie has helped me a lot and is the person I talk to about my life. She is an amazing lady and is one of the bravest people I know.”

Dawn and Yasmin both work for Sonnet Care Homes which operates both St Mary’s Court and The New Deanery care homes in Bocking, both of which have been rated by the Care Quality Commission as ‘outstanding’ for leadership and ‘good’ in all other aspects covering care, safety, effectiveness and responsiveness.
