Three Decades of Care: Millfield Care Home Celebrates 30 Years in the Bolsover Community

Millfield Care Home in Bolsover, Chesterfield, has marked 30 years at the heart of the community with a special summer event bringing residents, families, colleagues and friends together for an afternoon of music, dancing and memories, celebrating three decades of caring for local people, supporting families and creating a place where residents can feel at home.

The gardens and communal areas were transformed for the occasion, with games, stalls, a tombola, homemade cakes, refreshments and live entertainment giving residents and their loved ones plenty to enjoy.
Music was at the heart of the afternoon, with Alan Turner, who previously appeared on The X Factor and is a regular performer at Millfield, entertaining guests with a mix of much-loved favourites from The Beatles, John Denver, Cliff Richard and Motown.

It wasn’t long before residents, families and colleagues were singing along and dancing in the sunshine, while the Salvation Army Brass Band added to the atmosphere with a performance of their own.
The event brought several generations of families together, with residents joined by their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren for an afternoon spent together at the home.

For Karen Radford, Manager at Millfield, seeing residents enjoying themselves alongside the people they love was the highlight of the day. She said: ‘It makes everything we do worthwhile to see our residents enjoying themselves. The support from the community was amazing. Thanks to my amazing care team for helping our residents make happy memories.’

Resident Marion Retallic said: ‘It was a lovely day – I enjoyed sitting outside chatting with friends and staff, watching the entertainment. It was great.’

Resident Hilary Wright praised the event for being accessible to everyone, saying: ‘It was well planned and laid out. The stalls were all arranged for easy access for wheelchairs so I could have a go on everything. My daughter and grandson had a wonderful time too. I like the Salvation Army brass band, but the singer was very good too. Lovely time outside chatting and singing with everyone.’

For Ian Taylor, whose wife is a resident at Millfield, the highlight was spending time with his family. He said: ‘It was a well-organised day, the staff were great and our family, grandkids and great-grandkids had a great day.’

The anniversary was also a personal milestone for Elaine Lenthall, a domestic colleague who has worked at Millfield for all 30 years of its history.

To recognise her dedication, the management team presented Elaine with a long-service award, gift voucher, flowers and a thank-you card signed by colleagues and residents.

From generations of families singing together to a colleague celebrating 30 years of service, the day captured what Millfield is all about: caring for people, supporting families and creating moments that matter.
