Technology Of The Future Used For Innovative Activities At Local Care Home

technology-dovecoteThe technology of the future is being harnessed by Dovecote care home in High Spen to provide residents with cutting-edge and highly accessible activities.

Taking advantage of the latest technological advances, Dovecote has enhanced its activity offering by purchasing a set of Virtual Reality (VR) headsets. Dovecote’s Activities Coordinator, Chelsey Jackson, was inspired to purchase the headsets after attending an activities forum run by Gateshead Council.

Residents at the care home can now enjoy an exciting array of virtual adventures, from trips to Venice and other parts of Italy, through to an African safari, where they can follow a parade of elephants. One resident, Doreen, explored the deepest oceans on a diving mission to find hammer head sharks, while resident Betty relished her front row seat at the opera.

After purchasing the VR headsets, Dovecote created their own programmes, and residents can now take 360 degree tours of local villages and beaches. Virtual Reality can particularly assist residents with limited mobility, and those living with dementia, who can use the VR headsets as part of reminiscence therapy.

Chelsey Jackson, Activities Coordinator at Dovecote care home, commented:

“We are always thinking of news ways to offer Dovecote’s residents a varied activities programme, and the Virtual Reality headsets offer new and exciting option for residents.”
