Sutton Rose Care Home Residents Return to Villa Park for Unforgettable European Semi-Final Night Thanks to Aston Villa
Two Sutton Coldfield care home residents enjoyed a night to remember as Aston Villa helped make it possible for them to return to Villa Park for the club’s Europa League semi-final victory.
Ronald Archer, 95, and Richard Walker, 69, residents at Sutton Rose Care Home, part of Macc Care, were able to experience Aston Villa’s 4-0 win over Nottingham Forest on Thursday night, which saw the club reach the Europa League final after a 4-1 aggregate victory.
The special outing was made possible thanks to the generosity of Aston Villa, who supported the care home in securing a box for the two lifelong supporters, allowing them to enjoy the landmark match in comfort.
For Ron, who was one of Aston Villa’s longest-standing season ticket holders, the evening was particularly meaningful. Returning to Villa Park brought back years of memories and connection to the club he has followed for much of his life – which even included a brief stint playing for the team 80 years ago. Ron said: “It was lovely to be back. I’ve had a lot of good times at Villa Park over the years, so to be there again for a night like that was very special.”
Becky Bettam, Ron’s granddaughter, commented on the experience, saying: “My grandad and I can’t tell you how lovely this is to see. He actually played for Villa briefly around 80 years ago, I remember him showing me his pay cheque from them when I was younger. This will have meant the world to him. It was a fantastic game for him to have witnessed.”
The pair were accompanied by members of the Sutton Rose team, who said the night was about much more than football. From the moment they arrived, Ron and Richard were welcomed with warmth and kindness, before enjoying the atmosphere and emotion of one of the club’s most memorable European nights, with Richard saying: “The atmosphere was brilliant. I really enjoyed it and it was nice to be part of it all again.”
The residents returned home at 11.30pm after what the home described as “a proper night out”, complete with celebrations and plenty of smiles following Villa’s emphatic victory.
Rosie Boshell, Customer Relationship Manager at Sutton Rose Care Home, said: “Last night was about so much more than football. For Ron and Richard, Villa Park is a place filled with years of memories and passion, so to be able to take them back for such an important game was incredibly special. Ron was one of the club’s longest-standing season ticket holders, which made the evening even more meaningful – and what a result! We’re so grateful to Aston Villa for helping to make this possible and for the kindness shown to our residents throughout the evening.”
Bhav Amlani, Director at Macc Care, added: “Meaningful experiences don’t stop with age. Whether it’s returning to a much-loved football club like Aston Villa, or revisiting a favourite place or passion, these moments can have such a powerful impact on wellbeing. For Ron and Richard, this was a chance to feel the energy of Villa Park again, and to be part of something they love, while making new memories in a place that already means so much to them.”
