Supercentenarian and Honoured Veteran Celebrates 107th Birthday

Slough supercentenarian Richard Brown celebrated his 107th birthday this month – but preferred a quiet cuppa to a party!

Richard, who lives at Windmill Care Centre in Bath Road, Slough, was born in 1917, served in World War II and has seen five different monarchs during his lifetime.

He celebrated his 107th birthday at the home on March 18th, alongside members of his family, Son-in-Law David, and Grandson Darren.

Staff at the home, where Richard has lived for a number of years, couldn’t resist making a bit of a fuss, laying on birthday cake and decorations, despite Richard’s insistence he preferred a quiet life.

Richard told the team: “Let me enjoy my time here peacefully – I like music, and I like to watch the football with a cuppa!”

Richard was born in London during the First World War and served in the British Army from 1937 to 1946, throughout World War II. He received The Legion of Honour from the French Government – the highest French decoration and one of the most famous in the world, for the part he played during the D-Day landings.

Vanessa, manager at Windmill Care Home, part of the Maria Mallaband Care Group, said: “We feel so privileged to have Richard living here with us. He has had an extraordinary life, particularly distinguished by his honoured service during the Second World War. We are thrilled to be able to celebrate this special day with him – not many of us will be able to see our 107th year as he has!

“He is treasured by his family and by all of us at Windmill Care Home, and we all wish him the happiest of birthdays.”
