Shiver Me Timbers! Care Home Pirates Leap For Charity Booty

It was a case of ‘Ahoy me hearties’ as care home staff in Dorset took an exhilarating leap of faith to raise money for Dementia UK.

An intrepid party from Colten Care’s dementia care home Fernhill in Longham braved the Bournemouth Pier zipwire dressed as pirates.

Accompanied by family and friends, they ascended the 60ft (18 metre) high launch tower before zip-surfing the 820ft (250 metres) distance over the waves and back to shore.

Home Manager Gina Smith said: “The pirate theme was just for fun but actually it was appropriate because you did feel you were about to walk the plank when you were waiting to go on. It was a real challenge for those afraid of heights while others took it in their stride. In the end it was great fun and we’re thinking of trying a sky dive next year.”

The idea of doing a pirate-themed zipwire challenge was down to one of the home’s Activities Organisers, Ann-Marie Knight.

The day raised around £1,000 for Dementia UK, a charity nominated for support by residents, their families and team members at the home.

Colten Care has a policy of raising cash for charities and good causes at all 20 of its care homes in Dorset, Hampshire, Wiltshire and Sussex.
