Residents Winning Designs Revealed by Councillor Lt Col George Barton at Rectory House

Councillor Lt Col George Barton visited local homes this week as part of his Christmas events schedule and kindly agreed to visit residents and colleagues at Rectory House in Sompting to announce the winners of this year’s residents Christmas Card Competition. Residents were encouraged to get creative using any medium they wished to design a Christmas card.

The two winning designs were created by Mrs Kathleen Pilkington and Mrs Valerie Godley, who were presented with printed copies of their very sparkly cards in print, along with some festive treats by Councillor, Lt Col George Barton who was accompanied by his wife Vee. Guests also enjoyed a celebratory afternoon tea whilst being entertained by a local singer.

The homes rationale for developing and offering a diverse range of activities, clubs, competitions and events within the home is based on their knowledge that loneliness and social isolation can all have a negative impact on wellbeing and quality of life. Despite the proximity of others, older people living in care settings can sometimes experience loneliness too. By launching activities like this the home can encourage and maintain meaningful relationships between residents, relatives and colleagues and in addition connect with members of the local community. Experience has shown colleagues that encouraging painting, drawing and sculpting in old age helps protect against loneliness and dementia, as taking part in creative workshops in the arts stimulates the mind as well as activating the motor skills.

With over 30 years caring professionally for others Fiona Wiedekehr fell in love with nursing and wanting to make a difference. Ensuring residents health and wellbeing is vitally important says Fiona, “Creating a buzz with this Christmas Card competition offers meaningful engagement with others in the home and the community who join us at events like these. We know that these social, and creative activities, will significantly contribute to our residents’ wellbeing and reduce loneliness and we are delighted that Councillor Lt Col George Barton has agreed to take the time today to join us a celebrate our wonderful residents’ creativity.”
