Astronomy Expert Brings Solar Eclipse to Life for Telford Hall Residents

Residents at Telford Hall Care Home in Lawley Village had their own astronomy expert on hand to explain the science and spectacle of the solar eclipse.

Resident Tony Sizer, 80, has spent decades sharing his passion for science and astronomy with the public and was delighted to talk to fellow residents about the eclipse, explaining what happens when the Moon passes between the Earth and the Sun and why the phenomenon continues to capture people’s imagination.

Tony is a British chemist and science educator who studied chemistry at Pembroke College, Cambridge, before going on to develop a long association with astronomy and public science education.

He has been a long-standing planetarium lecturer at the Royal Observatory Greenwich and, over the years, has introduced countless people to the night sky through public lectures, telescope sessions and astronomy events.

Tony shared his knowledge with residents and staff at Telford Hall, part of Sandstone Care Group, talking about the science behind eclipses, their rarity and why they have fascinated people throughout history.

Tony said: “Astronomy has been a passion of mine for many years and an eclipse is always a particularly exciting event. There is something extraordinary about seeing the movements of the Sun, Moon and Earth come together in such a visible way.

“I really enjoyed being able to talk about it with everyone at Telford Hall and explain some of the science behind what was happening. One of the wonderful things about astronomy is that there is always something new to see, discuss and learn about.”

Maria Armstrong, Activities and Wellbeing Co-ordinator at Telford Hall Care Home, said: “Tony has an incredible depth of knowledge and his enthusiasm for astronomy is infectious. He was so excited about the eclipse and it was wonderful to see him sharing that passion with other residents.

“It sparked lots of questions and conversation and gave everyone a fascinating insight into an event that was capturing so much attention.”
