Professional Development Workshop Delves Into The Importance Of The Mental Capacity Act And Deprivation Of Liberties

DOLSSouth Gloucestershire and Stroud (SGS) College held a workshop for care home managers, Friday 30 November.

The workshop was the third in a series of ongoing events created specifically to support and up-skill care home managers. These workshops cover a multitude of topics, some more general while others are more targeted. The first workshop held in June covered CQC inspection preparation while the second focussed on supporting managers and deputy’s in Health and Social Care.

November’s workshop focussed on the mental capacity act (MCA) and deprivation of liberties (DoLs). The event covered a multitude of topics including how to embed MCA, understanding when and how to apply MCA, how to be inspection ready for MCA, DoLS discussion forum and more.

The event was run by experienced Social Care professional Leigh Bown, who has supported services to both good and outstanding ratings across both residential and community settings. Leigh has spent over three years as an inspector leading in the South Central region on Learning Disability and Supported Living. Leigh still works for the Care Quality Commission as a Specialist Professional Advisor specialising in working with behaviour that challenges and Quality Assurance.

Speaking about the event Martha G.G. Home manager said: “I previously participated in the CQC workshop at SGS and it was fantastic so I have now pre-registered for all future events, so that I can continue to update my knowledge, learn about any new changes and refresh my existing understanding.

“My experience with these workshops has been very good. Lee is great. The way he explains information is very clear and understandable. It’s also very personalised to each person too. He listens to what questions everybody has and adapts the info accordingly.”

SGS College will be hosting a number of additional events in the new year. Please contact Tracy Woolls on 01453 761163 or tracy.woolls@sgscol.ac.uk to register your interest.
