Park Avenue Care Home Welcomes the Mayor of Bromley to Honour the National Day of Reflection
Park Avenue Care Home in Bromley recently welcomed distinguished guests to mark the fifth anniversary of the National Day of Reflection.
Mayor of Bromley, Cllr Dr David Jefferys was in attendance to commemorate this national day, which began during the COVID-19 pandemic to remember the people whose lives were lost or affected.
This visit formed part of the Mayor’s commitment to honouring the day with organisations across the borough of Bromley. Recognising the significant challenges the pandemic brought, particularly for those living or working in healthcare settings, the Mayor was pleased to commemorate the National Day of Reflection surrounded by frontline teams who went above and beyond to provide dedicated care and support throughout a very challenging time.
During the visit the Mayor was invited to open a newly installed pergola in the garden at Park Avenue. This pergola will provide the care home community with a dedicated space to enjoy outdoor activities or catch up with friends. After enjoying conversations with the people living at Park Avenue, the Mayor cut the ribbon and officially opened the pergola!
Excelcare’s Chief Executive Officer, Osman ‘Ozzie’ Ertosun used this opportunity to present the mayor with a cheque for £200 to go towards his chosen charities and support of his fundraising efforts.
Home Manager, Charlotte then showed the Mayor and the Mayoral Attendant into their tea room for some light refreshments. The Mayor took interest in some of the dementia-friendly, interactive items that featured in the room, especially the themed memory boxes. Each box contained different items, relating to a theme or environment, designed to aid reminiscence and support cognitive function. This sparked conversations about ways in which team members can encourage reminiscence on the National Day of Reflection, with a focus on the positive elements of this tumultuous time, such as the rainbow of hope scheme and communities coming together to clap for key workers.
The Mayor of Bromley Cllr David Jefferys said: “It is important that we take the time to reflect on the pandemic and remember those who tragically had their lives cut short by the deadly virus and the many others who also suffered. While this was of course such a difficult time, it was also a period where so many also showed their bravery and generosity in supporting those who needed it, including here in Bromley. The reflections shared, including of incredible volunteers across the borough, were truly inspiring and I sincerely thank all those who supported residents during the pandemic in such varied and important ways.”
The team at Park Avenue appreciated the Mayor’s visit and the opportunity to share this important occasion with him. His recognition of their dedication during the pandemic was a touching tribute to their hard work and resilience.
