Oakland Care Receives King’s Award for Enterprise in Sustainable Development
Care home provider, Oakland Care, has been honoured with a prestigious King’s Award for Enterprise in Sustainable Development, recognising its pioneering approach to environmental responsibility across its portfolio of homes in London and the South East.
Oakland Care has been recognised for its long-standing commitment to sustainability, with environmentally responsible practices embedded across all aspects of its operations, from energy use and waste reduction to sustainable building design and biodiversity initiatives.
In recent years, the provider has introduced a wide range of initiatives to reduce its environmental impact. This has included becoming the first and only UK care home group to achieve carbon neutral certification back in 2021, a status they have retained for six consecutive years, planting more than 1,500 trees annually, and contributing over 2,000 hours of team time each year to local sustainability projects as part of community programmes.
Together, these efforts form part of a wider comprehensive strategy focused on delivering measurable change across its care homes, while maintaining the highest standards of care for residents.
The award reflects the organisation’s continued investment in sustainable development, as well as its commitment to equipping team members with the knowledge and tools needed to drive environmentally responsible practices in their roles.
It also reinforces Oakland Care’s forward-thinking approach to sustainability and a clear ambition to set new standards for environmentally conscious care provision – with the recent opening of Harpenden Springs, the businesses ‘greenest’ development to date, and one of the UK’s most environmentally friendly care homes, evidence of this.
To mark this accomplishment, a representative from Oakland Care will attend a Royal reception at St James Palace later this year, where award recipients will be formally celebrated.
Joanne Balmer, Chief Executive Officer at Oakland Care, said:
“We are incredibly proud to receive the King’s Award for Enterprise in Sustainable Development. This recognition is a testament to the dedication of our teams, who work tirelessly to embed sustainable practices across our homes and have been wholly committed to supporting our bold ambitions in this space.
“Our approach has always been about more than meeting targets. It’s about creating a lasting, positive impact for our residents, our communities and the environment, while also serving as trailblazers within the industry, helping to inspire and support others on their journey.
“We will continue to invest in innovation and our people as we build on this achievement and further strengthen our commitment to sustainability across the organisation.”
