“I’ve Waited A Long Time For This” – Care Home Resident Attends Boston United FC In First Ever Live Football Match
Two lifelong football fans from Avocet House care home in Lincolnshire, were given a day to remember after attending a live match at Boston United FC.
For 74-year-old Paul Osborne, the outing marked his very first live football match, an experience he finally got that chance to do later in life.
Meanwhile, for 80-year-old, Phil Stocker, it was an emotional return to a club close to his heart, attending his first Boston United game in over a decade.
Despite following football his entire life, formally a fan of Leyton Orient FC having lived in London, Paul had never attended a live football match. Upon moving into Avocet House in October 2025, Paul has grown fond of Boston United FC and relished the opportunity to watch a game.
He said, “I’ve waited a long time for this. Watching football on TV is one thing, but being there in person—it’s completely different. I loved every minute.”
Phil, also from London and a former Arsenal FC supporter, developed a deep connection with Boston United after settling in Boston in 1990. He regularly attended matches with his grandson Jonathan and proudly keeps his Boston United scarf displayed in his room at Avocet House.
Reflecting on the day, Phil said, “It meant so much to be back at Boston United. I used to go all the time with my grandson Jonathan, and it brought back so many happy memories. It felt like coming home.”
The residents were accompanied by care staff Graham and Rita, both avid football fans, making the day a shared celebration of sport and companionship. The group even had the chance to take photos with members of the team and the club mascot, adding to the excitement of the occasion.
Lorraine Relton, activities co-ordinator at Avocet House, commented, “Our two gents, Phil and Paul, had an amazing time watching Boston United FC play live at their brilliant ground. They were joined by our wonderful care staff —both big football fans themselves—and it’s safe to say everyone had a great time. Seeing their smiles made it all worthwhile.”
