NHS Health Checks Are Vital Way To Focus On Brain Health And Help Prevent Dementia

Alzheimers-Research-UK-logoAlzheimer’s Research UK is encouraging the public to take advantage of NHS Health Checks to monitor their brain health and help prevent dementia. The call comes after Public Health England today reported that over half of English adults are missing their Health Checks.

Alzheimer’s Research UK collaborated with Public Health England and Alzheimer’s Society to include dementia prevention messaging in Health Checks for 40-64 year olds, as well as for those over the age of 65.

Helen Davies, Head of Public Affairs at Alzheimer’s Research UK, said:

“NHS health checks are a good way for people to get a clearer picture of their brain health, highlight positive lifestyle changes, and reduce the risk of conditions like dementia.

“There is good evidence to suggest that what’s good for the heart is also good for the brain. Unfortunately, while 77% people believe they can reduce their risk of heart disease, only 34% of people know they can reduce their risk of dementia according to the Alzheimer’s Research UK’s Dementia Attitudes Monitor.

“Research shows that midlife is a crucial time to take action to maintain a healthy brain into later life. Not smoking, only drinking within the recommended guidelines, staying mentally and physically active, eating a balanced diet, and keeping blood pressure and cholesterol levels in check have all been linked to a lower risk of dementia and better overall health.

“With dementia now the UK’s leading cause of death, we must encourage everyone to take positive steps to maintain good brain health throughout life and into older age. Alzheimer’s Research UK is calling on the government to spearhead dedicated dementia risk reduction and wider brain health campaigns for the public and medical professionals.”
