Codebreaker At Bletchley Celebrated Her 100th Birthday

Celebrations have been in full swing at Hampton Grove in Hampton Vale Peterborough as one of its residents reaches her centenary in style.

Betty Everest was joined by staff, relatives, friends and other residents as she received a Card from His Royal Majesty king Charles and Queen Camilla in recognition of her landmark birthday. A party was held at the home and guests enjoyed a special birthday cake made by the home’s chef.

When asked what Betty’s wishes were for her birthday, it was to visit Hunstanton and have lunch with her friends at the Salvation Army day centre that she used to attend in Peterborough.

Hampton Grove helped to arrange this with the Salvation Army, and on the day of her birthday the Salvation Army band also came to play for her.

Family and friends from far came to celebrate this special birthday with her.

As a job Betty used to analyse signals intercepted from European embassies at Bletchley Park in Milton Keynes during World War Two.

Her job was to look out for key words and then flag the signals up to higher levels of the park, then went on to work for the Hertfordshire City Council as a short hand typist.
