Alzheimer’s Research UK Reports 29% Annual Increase In Voluntary Income

Alzheimer’s Research UK, the UK’s leading dementia research charity, has announced its highest annual income to date as donations pass £14m. The figure has been released in the charity’s Annual Review.

The charity, which funds research across the UK and internationally, relies on public donations and the rise in income to just over £14.2m – a 29% increase from 2013, underlines Alzheimer’s Research UK’s continuous growth as a success story in the UK voluntary sector.

Alzheimer’s Research UK invests in world-class research to prevent, treat and cure dementia, and funds science from unique pilot projects through to major strategic initiatives. The charity is currently investing over £23m across 127 ongoing research projects at centres of dementia research excellence across the UK, and will also unveil a host of new innovative research programmes in the coming months.

This year’s record income has enabled Alzheimer’s Research UK to invest over £9.7m in charitable activity, including committing £7.6m to 62 new research projects – the charity’s highest research investment to date. In addition to this a further £1.5m has been designated towards a network of pioneering Drug Discovery Institutes bringing effective treatments to patients sooner. Alzheimer’s Research UK has also provided free information to the public and health professionals, providing expert advice about dementia and the latest advances in research.

The record increase in income was achieved in the year the charity developed and launched its Defeat Dementia Campaign, which aims to raise a minimum of £100m for dementia research over the next five years.

“Dementia affects over 830,000 people in the UK and in an ageing population this figure is expected to rise. It’s a life-shattering condition and currently there are no treatments to stop the disease processes in their tracks. Alzheimer’s Research UK is determined to change this and we will continue to invest in world-class research until we have defeated dementia.”
