Thornton Le Dale Care Home Hosts Summer Extravaganza Raising £1000 For Historic Local Shelter
The Hall Care Home in Thornton le Dale recently welcomed the local community for its annual summer fayre and the Lap the Lawn sponsored walk, raising much-needed funds for the Lady Lumley’s Almshouses ‘Raise the Roof’ appeal.
One of the home’s most anticipated events of the year, the summer fayre brought together residents, families, staff, and members of the wider community. The event featured a hog roast provided by Trotters Farm Shop and delicious ice cream from the Velo Ice Cream Company. Visitors also enjoyed animal encounters with Butterwick Alpacas and Animal House Birds of Prey, while a variety of local stallholders offered handmade crafts and treats.
All proceeds from the fair went to the Raise the Roof appeal, which supports vital repairs to the roof extensions at the rear of the Grade II-listed Lady Lumley’s Almshouses. The repairs are essential to preserving the historic buildings, which were founded in 1670 through the will of Lady Frances Lumley. Originally built to provide housing for the poor, the Almshouses remain an integral part of village life today, continuing their long-standing tradition of offering shelter to those in need. The fundraising also helps cover associated costs, including temporary accommodation during the building work.
The Hall’s annual Lap the Lawn event also took place on the day, with residents and children from Thornton Dale School taking part in a sponsored walk around the care home’s grounds. The event remains a much-loved community tradition, promoting intergenerational connection while supporting meaningful local causes. This year, all funds raised from the walk also went towards the Raise the Roof appeal.
Diane Hagan, manager at The Hall Care Home, said:
“The summer fayre is one of the best events of the year for us, bringing everyone in our community together. It’s always a fun day, full of laughter and great food. This year, it felt even more special because we were raising money for such a worthwhile cause. The Lady Lumley’s Almshouses are a treasured part of our village’s heritage, and it’s so important that we protect them for the future.”
Gill Garbutt OBE, the Chair of Lady Lumleys Almshouses Charitable Trust said:
“We are absolutely delighted with the support and generous donation from The Hall for our Raising The Roof project.
“The almshouses are more than just buildings -they’re a living part of our village’s story. By supporting this project, you’re not just fixing a roof; you’re preserving a legacy of compassion and community that dates back centuries.”
