Thorn Springs Resident Gets Back in the Saddle to Raise £479 for Alzheimer’s Society

A resident at Thorn Springs Care Home in Houghton Regis has returned to his cycling roots in a fundraising challenge, raising £479 for Alzheimer’s Society.

Graham Russell has always had a passion for cycling and, when he was younger, took on the impressive challenge of cycling from John O’Groats to Land’s End.

Graham often talks fondly about his love of bikes and how much he misses cycling, so the team at Thorn Springs wanted to find a way for him to reconnect with something that means so much to him.

After coming up with the idea of an exercise bike, the team transformed the care home’s cinema room into a virtual cycling experience. Graham was able to ride the exercise bike while watching a YouTube video recreating a cycling journey from Land’s End to John O’Groats, giving him the feeling of completing the iconic route once again.

Residents, relatives and colleagues gathered to cheer Graham on and encourage him as he took on his virtual cycling challenge.

Inspired by Graham’s own experience living with Alzheimer’s, the team decided to turn the challenge into a sponsored fundraiser for Alzheimer’s Society.

The five-mile sponsored ride saw Graham raising an impressive £479 thanks to generous donations from fellow residents, their families and staff at Thorn Springs.

The challenge was a particularly special moment for everyone at the care home, who were delighted to see Graham enjoying an activity linked to one of his lifelong passions.

Front of House Manager Melanie Metherell said: “It was so lovely to see how much Graham enjoyed doing this. You can tell he has a real passion for cycling, and he had great support from our residents, staff and families. We are all so proud of him and so happy that, as a team, we could make this possible for him.”

Graham said: “I really enjoyed myself. It was nice having people cheer me on. I can’t wait to do it again.”

The team at Thorn Springs hopes the challenge will inspire Graham to continue enjoying cycling-related activities and creating new memories with those around him.
