Stalybridge Resident Celebrates 105th Birthday

stalyA resident from Meridian Healthcare’s The Millbrook celebrated her 105th birthday in style, with family, friends and special guests.

To commemorate the occasion, Elizabeth Morrison was treated to a traditional English tea party where the care home in Stalybridge also welcomed the Civic Mayor of Tameside, Councillor Philip Fitzpatrick.

Born in 1911, Betty, as she prefers to be called, grew up in Stockport. She recalls: “There were no means of transport back then, I had to walk everywhere.” Her first job was working in one of the many Cheshire mills, earning around 10 shillings a week in the weaving shed.

Betty’s favourite job was at Vernon Mill where she worked as a doffer, removing bobbins and spindles holding spun fiber from a spinning frame and replacing with empty ones.

Married to her late husband Daniel, the couple went on to have six children, five girls and one boy. Betty now has a huge extended family with 13 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and 25 great-great-grandchildren.

Betty moved to Stalybridge with her family in 1982 and finally into The Millbrook care home in September 2015.  Betty commented: “My secret to reaching 105 is having a happy family, lots of love and to keep on walking!”

Odette Wilson, Meridian Healthcare’s care centre manager, added: “Betty is a very special lady with such an optimistic attitude to life. She is a pleasure to be around and we were so proud to see her celebrate such a special birthday.”
