Six Steps To The Best End Of Life Care At Ivy Court

CQC-logoIvy Court Care Home in Norwich has been awarded the industry-recognised Six Steps to Success accreditation for providing the best possible end of life care to residents.

Three nurses at Ivy Court, a home run by Caring Homes in Ivy Road, Norwich, have studied for the Six Steps to Success qualification over the past year and are now sharing their knowledge with colleagues at the home.

Ivy Court deputy manager Vanessa Soares explained: “It is our aim to give the best care we can to our residents and the Six Steps programme is proven to lead to better end of life care by increasing our knowledge and awareness of the issues. Evidence of our commitment to the programme will be kept in a portfolio that everyone can reference.”

The Six Steps programme – which is run in Norfolk by Norfolk Community Health and Care NHS Trust –  equips all staff to recognise and effectively manage end of life situations. This is done by close working with the resident, their families and other organisations to deliver the best quality care and ensure the widest possible amount of choice for the individual both before, during and after end of life care.

“Homes throughout Caring Homes are gaining this accreditation or have colleagues working towards it and the knowledge is being shared across the workforce,” added Vanessa.

“We are extremely proud of our nurses – Beata Bialasik, Magdalena Jakubowska and Hristina Hristova – for gaining accreditation from this course.”

Ivy Court is a purpose built nursing home offering the highest standards of residential, nursing and specialist dementia care for up to 71 elderly residents.

The Six Steps programme is an end of life care quality improvement programme especially designed for care homes. It is underpinned by the six steps laid out in the National End of Life Care Strategy (2008) and the subsequent framework for social care published by the National End of Life Care Programme in 2010.

Six Steps supports care homes to fulfil the end of life support needs detailed in the Care Quality Commission (CQC) Essential Standards of Quality and Safety.
