Royal Memorabilia And Newspapers Spark Idea For A Nostalgia Room At Avocet Court

Avocet Court Care Home in Ipswich has embarked on a nostalgic initiative that has captivated its residents and created a bridge between the past and the present.

The inspiration for the project emerged when a copy of the Ipswich Evening Star from 1962, featuring the headline of Jackie Milburn’s departure as the manager of Ipswich Town FC, was brought into the home by thoughtful visitors.

The vintage local newspaper stirred a wave of interest among the residents, sparking the idea of establishing a dedicated Nostalgia Room within the care home. This room would become a treasure trove of memories, offering residents an immersive experience of bygone eras, connecting them to their personal histories.

A significant contribution to the Nostalgia Room comes from Ipswich couple Betty and Roy Stansfield. They have generously presented Avocet Court with a splendid collection of royal memorabilia comprising books and magazines centred around the royal family. The collection, dating back to the late 1940s, was originally discovered in the loft of Mrs. Sarah Ramsey of Woodbridge. Mrs. Ramsey passed on her find to her friends, Betty and Roy, who reside in Ipswich’s Coral Drive.

The royal collection spans weddings, anniversaries, stately gardens, and homes, as well as a souvenir brochure from one of Britain’s historic funerals. This brochure commemorates the February 23, 1952, funeral of King George VI, featuring stories and pictures of his life and the procession through the streets of London to Westminster Abbey. A broadsheet edition of The Times and a hefty Daily Mail, both marking the royal funeral, provide a glimpse into the pricing and journalistic styles of that era.

Avocet Court Manager, Ruth Garnham, expressed her delight at receiving the collection or Royal memorabilia and said she was keen to get the Nostalgia Room completed.

Ruth said, “It is a fascinating collection, and we were delighted to receive it. With the late Queen’s 75th anniversary last year and also the Coronation of King Charles we know how much the Royal family means to our residents. The team at Avocet Court is now looking at putting together the Nostalgia Room which would include many things reflecting the lives of our residents.”
