Residents Vote For Top Dog At Care Home Canine Competition

Residents at Three Elms, the Minster Care-run residential home in Warrington, made some new furry friends as they invited local dogs and owners to take part in a dog show at the home. Breeds lining up for the prestigious title of ‘Best in Show’ included, amongst others, a Chihuahua, a Jack Russell Terrier and a Yorkshire Terrier.

On the day of the competition, as well as giving their thoughts on the top dog, residents helped groom the animals before the judging process, fed them treats and even taught them new tricks with the help of their owners.

Bruno, a Bedlington Terrier Lurcher Cross, was crowned top dog by judge Margaret Birchall, a longtime friend of Three Elms and volunteer with animal charity, Pets as Therapy (PAT). Margaret frequently brings her Crufts-winning dogs to the home to offer comfort and companionship to residents.

The event also raised £80 for the Three Elms Activities Fund, which is used to pay for days out, entertainment and activity supplies at the home.

Animal assisted therapy (AAT), when people interact with animals for therapeutic purposes, is widely recognised by health professionals to have both mental and physical health benefits for older people in a care setting.

Louise Derbyshire, Activities Coordinator at Three Elms, commented: “The dog show was a great way for us to further connect with the community, and everyone loved having the chance to meet and chat with local residents. Our residents especially enjoyed being around the animals, who were all very friendly and enjoying the attention. On behalf of everyone at Three Elms, I’d like to say a big thank you to all the dogs and owners who took part in the competition for making the day such a great success.”
