Residents At Drovers House ‘Come Dine With Apetito’ In Support Of National Nutrition And Hydration Week

Untitled-1To mark this year’s National Nutrition and Hydration Week (14th – 20th March), residents from Drovers House care home in Rugby, run by charity WCS Care, held their own very special ‘Come Dine with Me’ event supported by leading food provider, apetito.

Residents and their relatives chose the complete restaurant experience, as staff from apetito and Drovers House pulled out all the stops and even dressed up in chef whites.  On the menu was a three-course meal, prepared especially for the event, which included chunky vegetable soup, lamb and potato curry, steak pie with flaky pastry, sticky toffee pudding and summer fruit crumble.

The ‘Come Dine with Me’ themed event was aimed at raising awareness of good nutrition and hydration, plus the important emotional benefits associated with socialising.

Ellen Brown, Divisional Manager Care Homes at apetito, said: “Elderly malnutrition is a huge problem in the UK, which is why we’re keen to support Nutrition and Hydration Week every year.  Turning mealtimes into a fun occasion like this, complete with nourishing and tasty food, can help improve residents’ appetites and make mealtimes more enjoyable.

“By working with food providers such as apetito, homes can rest assured that residents are treated to meals that fit their individual nutritional needs and – more importantly – that they can look forward to eating.”

Ed Russell, Director of Innovation for WCS Care, added: “Holding the event as part of National Nutrition and Hydration Week reminded us just how important creating a dementia-friendly eating environment is.  Thanks to the great food and service from apetito, we saw first-hand how home-cooked smells, such as freshly baked bread and roast beef, can lift spirits and remind residents of family and past times, even those in late stage dementia, where sensory experiences are often reduced.”

Nutrition and Hydration Week is a nationally-recognised initiative organised by the National Association of Care Catering (NACC), the Hospital Caterers Association (HCA) and the National Patient Safety Agency (NPSA).
