Recognition For Amore Care Dementia Strategy

Amore Care’s Dementia Strategy and Creative Minds programme has been shortlisted for a Positive Practice Mental Health Award, recognising outstanding work in the Older People’s category.

The Dementia Strategy, which has been created with Amore nurses and carers, is supported by Martin Green, CEO of the English Care Homes Association and Jeremy Hughes, CEO of Alzheimer’s Society, and sets out a series of objectives to improve the wellbeing of residents and their families.

The strategies and objectives are designed to ensure that every resident has a positive living experience. It includes the development of centres of excellence in each region, the appointment of regionally-based dementia coaches to support best practice development and dedicated dementia coordinators in each home.

The strategy was designed to meet The Prime Minister’s Dementia Challenge in raising awareness of, and responding to, the needs of people with dementia.

An integral part of the strategy is the ‘Creative Minds’ programme. This key initiative is designed to change the thinking of the care home teams to encourage creative ideas and develop vibrant care home communities to improve the quality of life for people with dementia.

The Creative Minds programme is accredited with the University of Brighton following a rigorous process, confirming that the programme provides innovative, best practice principles.

The focus of the strategy is on individualised dementia care and community involvement to place the care homes at the heart of the community.

Steve Amos, dementia lead at Amore Care, said:  “Our strategy is unique in providing a straight forward and clear approach to supporting people with dementia. We’ve already seen a number of successes including residents re-connect with their occupations, staff supporting residents and families to create life histories using creative art, and using sensory media for people at the later stages of dementia.

“I am delighted to see the commitment and passion our staff receiving the recognition and being shortlisted for this award.”

The winner will be announced on October 23rd 2014 at a prestigious awards ceremony.
