Priory Care Home In Accrington Welcomes Mayo

Amore Care’s Addison Court care home, welcomed The Mayor of Hyndburn, Judith Addison to join in with a ‘Dementia Friend’s’ session.

During her visit, the Mayor viewed the care home’s new Namaste care room, a worldwide programme that provides compassionate, holistic and person centred care. She took the opportunity to chat with residents and was presented with flowers by Alice Wallwork, a resident who was previously Mayoress of Accrington when husband Wilf was Mayor.

Launched in 2012, ‘Dementia Friends’ is about giving more people an understanding of dementia and the small things that could make a difference to people living in their community. With a target of educating one million people by 2015, the initiative will provide the knowledge to help people with dementia feel understood.

Amore Care, part of the Priory Group, offers residential, nursing and dementia care to older people with varying levels of need. Addison Court is a purpose-built care home based on Addison Street, which provides care for up to 48 older people, including those with dementia.

Ann-Marie Potter, care home manager at Addison Court, said: “The ‘Dementia Friends’ sessions have really benefitted the residents. Alice in particular enjoyed the visit of The Mayor of Hyndburn and she loved showing off photographs of her own experience as the Mayoress of Accrington.

“The residents really enjoy new people visiting the care home and the knowledge that comes with the Dementia Friends initiative allows people to connect with the residents on a more understanding level.”

Judith Addison, The Mayor of Hyndburn, said:  “My visit to Addison Court helped me gain a greater appreciation of dementia and most of all to look beyond the illness to the person who is still there.”
