Oak Springs Care Home Teams Up with Local School

Liverpool’s Oak Springs Care Home teamed up with a local primary school to celebrate their annual sports day.

Residents and staff from Oak Springs in Wavertree were invited along to Lawrence Community Primary School in Lawrence Road, Liverpool. The home brought fresh fruit and water for all the children to enjoy.

Pupils asked the residents to join in with their egg and spoon race on the day. They also watched the children take part in events ranging from the long jump and javelin to three legged races.

One of the residents said:
“What a wonderful time we had at the sports day. How could you not enjoy all those children’s smiling faces? It was wonderful to see them all getting stuck in and getting competitive.”

Andrea Lyon, Registered Manager of Oak Springs Care Home, which provides residential, dementia and respite care for older people, said:

“The residents had such a lovely day and they really enjoyed giving out the fruit and water and cheering the children on in their races.

“It was fun for them to interact with the children, and it wasn’t long before they began reminiscing about their own sports days at school. They discussed their school PE uniforms and they all remembered taking part in egg and spoon races.

“Many of them hadn’t been to a sports day at a school since their own children were little. They returned to the home all elated and bursting to tell everyone else about their day and the children.
“Local community connections are so important to us and to our residents, especially as many of them lived in the area. We’re looking forward to growing our community relationships and we are honoured to have been invited back to the school for more events.”

Since attending the sports day, the school has invited the residents to watch pupils pony riding at Park Palace Ponies in Dingle and paddle boarding and kayaking at Liverpool Water Sports Centre.

Andy McCormack, the school’s Sports Leader, said:

“The sports day was a resounding success and it was made even better with the generosity of Sandstone Care Group and the visit from the lovely staff and residents of Oak Springs Care Home who came along to help us celebrate it.

“These wonderful people didn’t just bring themselves; they also brought each child in our Key Stage two (years 3, 4, 5 & 6) a bottle of water and some fruit. This was a marvellous gesture and it was very well received by our children who were delighted.”
