Major New Care Home to Create 75 Jobs in York
Construction of a major new care home in Holgate, York, is entering its final stages, with St Mary’s Care Homes confirming that Acomb Manor Care Home is on track to start welcoming new residents in early winter 2026.
The 66-bed home will provide residential, dementia and respite care for families across York and the wider North Yorkshire area.
Acomb Manor Care Home has been designed to bring long-term employment opportunities to the area. At full occupancy, the home will support around 75 staff, including care, hospitality, wellbeing and support roles, with recruitment planned to begin later this year.
The opening comes at a crucial time, with demand for specialist elderly care continuing to grow across York and North Yorkshire. In North Yorkshire, 57% of all new permanent care home admissions are now for people living with dementia, reflecting the increasing need for specialist support.
At the same time, around one in four people in the county (25%) are aged 65 or over – significantly higher than the England average of 18.4% – with the ageing population expected to drive further demand for high-quality residential and dementia care in the years ahead.
Acomb Manor Care Home also represents one of St Mary’s Care Homes’ most sustainable developments to date. It is fully electric and powered through a combination of air source heat pumps and solar PV panels, enabling the scheme to achieve an EPC rating of A. This approach will keep energy use low while maintaining high levels of comfort and reliability for residents.
The care home, which will provide 34,643 square feet of accommodation, will feature en-suite bedrooms across three floors, along with a range of comfortably furnished communal lounges where residents can relax and socialise. Other facilities will include an on-site pub and hair salon, beautifully landscaped gardens, and a varied programme of resident-led activities and events.
Kate Desmond, Managing Director of Acomb Manor Care Home, said: “We are looking forward to welcoming residents, their families and the wider community to Acomb Manor Care Home later this year. Our priority is to create a warm, welcoming home where people receive compassionate, person-centred care and are supported to live fulfilling lives.
“Every aspect of Acomb Manor has been designed with residents in mind, from the comfortable living spaces and engaging activities to the dedicated team who will provide personalised support every day. We want Acomb Manor to become a valued part of the local community – somewhere residents remain connected to the people and places that matter to them, and where families always feel welcome.”
Steven Davis, CEO of St Mary’s Care Homes, said: “The opening of Acomb Manor Care Home marks another important milestone in the continued growth of St Mary’s Care Homes, reflecting our commitment to investing in high-quality care homes where they are needed most. This represents a significant investment in York, creating around 75 new jobs while delivering a modern care home that will serve local families for many years to come.
“As we continue to grow, we remain committed to investing responsibly in communities where high-quality care is needed most. Acomb Manor reflects that approach, combining skilled job creation with sustainable, energy-efficient design to deliver a care home that will benefit local families for generations to come.”
