It Takes Two To Tandem

Caring duo Sean Speakman and Shaun JonesStocks Hall St Helens held a charity bike ride with a difference which raised a fabulous £510.

Caring duo Sean Speakman, Unit Supervisor and Shaun Jones, Care Assistant from Stocks Hall Nursing & Group, St Helens took part in a sponsored bike ride recently, cycling a gruelling 28 miles….but with a twist….they we’re on a tandem bike and in fancy dress!

The route stretched a total of 28 miles, beginning at Southport Pier and returning back to the Care Home in Denton’s Green, St Helens.

The twosome dressed as the poplar TV commercial characters, the ‘118 118’ men, complete with black curly wigs and retro shorts and vest! Sean said “It’s fair to say we got a few strange looks along our journey, but it was certainly a lot of fun!”

In a fantastic time of 2 hours 40 minutes, the pair returned to a roar of cheers as they passed the banner on the finishing line (especially made by people who live at the home).

Staff, friends, family members and people living at the home gathered together to celebrate and congratulate Sean and Shaun on their huge achievement.

Speaking about the ride, Sean Speakman said “It was a tough challenge, neither of us had been on a bike since we were 9 years old, and we did no training prior to the event. We couldn’t walk for 3 days after! The prospect of raising so much money for the home, which is close to our heart, seemed a perfect fit and it was all worth it.”

Final sponsorship figures are not yet confirmed but the duo have already raised a minimum of £510.

Based on Elderflower Road, Stocks Hall St Helens is a purpose built Nursing and Care Home that provides care for 54 residents and offers a unique dynamic provision for many specialised areas of need. Stocks hall Group aims to maintain lifestyles as similar as possible to those enjoyed at home, with an extensive range of activities which individuals can enjoy and benefit from.

Julie Gaskell, Manager of the Home said “Individual donations including sponsored events like these allow us to provide life-enhancing services and opportunities such as outings and social activities, so those in our care can continue to live life to the full. At Stocks Hall we are very proud when our staff demonstrate such kindness towards people they care for and their families. As a Group, we are hugely appreciative of Sean and Shaun’s efforts and dedication.”
