Herald Lodge Care Home Rated ‘Good’ By Care Quality Commission For A Second Time

Herald Lodge resident Mrs Beryl Smith and Senior Care Assistant, Gemma Pearcey, enjoyed a recent canal boat trip

Herald Lodge care home in Canley, Coventry has been rated ‘Good’ by the Care Quality Commission (“CQC”).  The latest inspection report was published after CQC made an unannounced visit to the home in July.  This is the second time that Herald Lodge, which is operated by Ideal Carehomes, has achieved the enviable ‘Good’ rating in all key areas of care: safe, effective, caring, responsive and well-led.

During the visit, the CQC Inspectors spoke with various people at Herald Lodge, including residents, relatives, friends and staff members in order to compile the report.  The Inspectors consistently found that residents who live at Herald Lodge feel safe and are receiving person-centred care whilst maintaining their independence, freedom of choice and dignity.  They also found that the home had made significant improvements since the last ‘Good’ inspection in November 2015, and are moving towards an ‘Outstanding’ rating.

Relatives were eager to give their own glowing feedback to the Inspectors stating that they would rate the home “100%”.  They could not speak highly enough of the caring, thoughtful and compassionate staff, who they called “angels” as “nothing is too much trouble for them” and the “residents come first”.

When asked, staff remarked what a pleasure it is to work at Herald Lodge as “all the residents are like a big family”.  Inspectors received very positive feedback about Home Manager, Rachel Hallinan, concluding that she and her staff team are passionate about providing good quality care to their residents.  Rachel said, “I could not be prouder of all the staff at Herald Lodge.  The report is exactly right when it says that our number one priority is our residents – we really are like a family and we treat all our residents as we would want to be treated.  We will continue to do what we are doing at Herald Lodge and I am sure we have everything in place to be the first ‘Outstanding’ home in Canley!”

On the day of the visit, Inspectors found residents involved in various activities including a birthday party, a fitness class and listening to a live harpist whilst indulging in a cheese and wine buffet.  Relatives were quick to add how impressed they are with the scale of activities and regular trips including Coventry Market and a recent canal boat trip.  One said, “My relative is getting 100% more interaction [and] activities than they were getting when they were at home which is great”.

The overarching theme of the report is that residents feel safe and happy whilst living at Herald Lodge, with the Home Manager and staff team proving to be caring, supportive and responsive at all times.  Herald Lodge provides residential and dementia care for 42 local older people.  Through a varied programme of activities, highly nutritious food and inspirational spaces, the home provides residents with person-centred care, creating aspirational lifestyle choices.
