Granddaughter Of Former Resident At Workington Home Raises More Than £2000 By Walking 74 Miles
The granddaughter of a former resident at a Workington home has raised more than £2000 by walking over 70 miles.
Ella Sowerby decided to do the fundraiser for MHA Amathea where her nan Evelyn Dixon was a resident before she passed away.
Ella walked the distance from her nan’s house in Penrith to the home in Workington and back which came to a total of 74 miles.
She set aside two weeks to complete the challenge which worked out an average of 5.3 miles a day.
The total amount raised currently stands at £2422.00 and will go towards the homes amenities fund from which two trips and a garden party have been planned.
The home provides residential and dementia care for 40 residents
Speaking after the challenge Ella said:
“I am over the moon with the amount I have managed to raise.
“Me and the rest of my family were very happy with the care that was shown to my nan and I always wanted to do something for the home to show our appreciation.
“Seeing the support the community has shown has been very nice to see.
“The challenge was not too tough, I work as a waitress which helped in getting my steps up and I did all the miles by just walking.
“The funds will go a long way into ensuring the residents take part in fun activities and I feel very blessed in what I have achieved.”
Cheryl Taylor, home manager said:
“Ella has been in touch with me on a daily basis and updating me with how she was doing.
“The amount is definitely a lot more than what we expected, and Ella has gone above and beyond in memory of her nan..
“The residents are overwhelmed with the result, I want to thank our small knit community for their support and also a huge thanks to Ella for thinking about us.”
