From Blackpool to Florida – Families Reunited at Pennystone Court After 30 Years Apart

openingMHA Pennystone Court care home in Blackpool has announced the grand opening of its new, interactive IT room. The multi-functional facility, which provides residents with a place to learn about technology and catch up with long-distance loved ones, will be opened on Friday 22nd March by Mayor of Blackpool, Gary Coleman and local MP, Paul Maynard.

Recognising that many residents at the home have relatives living all over the world, staff set about running fundraising events, such as fairs, charity nights and even filming a ‘lip syncing’ video which went viral, until they raised the £4000 needed to build the IT facility.

The new room is equipped with a 55-inch TV with access to YouTube, two desktop computers with large keyboards especially designed for sensory impairment, one laptop, an iPad and even a Google Home device. To ensure those using the facilities feel as relaxed as possible, a tea and coffee making area has been added, along with comfortable seating and soft LED lighting.

Susan Powell, 76, whose son is getting married a day after the IT room opens, plans to video call the newly-weds dressed as the mother of the bride and is excited to be able to see her new daughter-in-law wearing the bracelet she gave as a wedding gift.

For Betty Page, 88, and Helena Arnott, 85, access to this new technology means both can video call their long-distance relatives and talk to a nephew and great-grandchild who they have never met.

Home Manager, Elizabeth Robins comments: “My team are passionate about not only providing quality care but looking at how we can go above and beyond for our residents to enrich their lives.

These exciting new facilities open up so many possibilities for our residents. With access to YouTube, they can watch videos to reminisce about old times or listen to their favourite music.”

She goes on to add: “Raising all of the money ourselves means so much to everyone at Pennystone Court. I am very proud of the team and can’t wait to see residents enjoying the room.”
