Eston Care Home Manager Wins ‘Lifetime Achievement Award’

Caroline Bowstead, home manager at Astune Rise in Eston, part of Popular Care, has been recognised with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Redcar & Cleveland Care Awards, celebrating an exceptional 17-years.

Caroline has been part of the Astune Rise team since 2007, supporting the home in a variety of roles before becoming home manager in November 2018. Her leadership is defined by dedication, transparency and a commitment to providing the highest quality of care.

Holding an NVQ Level 5 in Management and Leadership and an NVQ Level 3 in Health and Social Care, she ensures that the home continually exceeds expectations. Despite not having a CQC inspection since 2020, Astune Rise has maintained outstanding standards, achieving 100% in a recent Quality Framework Inspection by Redcar and Cleveland Council.

Caroline’s approach is person-centred and deeply rooted in respect and dignity. She is known for her proactive style, infectious enthusiasm, and ability to create meaningful experiences for residents, staff and families alike. Her recent fundraising efforts saw her complete the Middlesbrough Half Marathon, raising £1,500 for the home’s residents.

Part of the money was spent on a memorable Teesside Princess cruise, and fish and chips on Saltburn beach, days filled with laughter and togetherness.

“My life really does revolve around Astune Rise,” said Caroline. “The residents are like family to me, and everything we do is about making their lives safe, comfortable and, above all, fun. I’m so proud of my team and the joy we bring to the people who live here. This award really belongs to all of us.”

Laughter is central to life at Astune Rise. Earlier this year, the home became a viral sensation when Max from the Dreamboys male stripper troupe surprised residents during a knit and natter session. The visit was featured on national television and in media outlets across the world – from Australia to the US – proving that joy and creativity have no age limit.

Caroline’s personal touch also shines through in moments of deep significance. When Dennis Smith, a 98-year-old resident, was appointed Chevalier in the Order national de la Légion d’Honneur, she organised a special ceremony attended by his family, the High Sheriff and Brigadier General Armel Dirou. It was a moment that brought pride and tears to all who witnessed it.

Steve Massey, operations manager at Popular Care, praised Caroline’s exceptional leadership and spirit:
“Caroline is one of those rare people who makes everyone around her better. Her passion, humour and integrity inspire her team and enrich the lives of everyone at Astune Rise. This award is a fitting tribute to an incredible career.”
