Dorchester Care Home Team Complete 26-Mile Trek to Honour World Alzheimer’s Month

A Dorchester care home team have raised over £1,600 by walking 26 miles in honour of World Alzheimer’s Month.

Staff from Maiden Castle House care home on Gloucester Road walked for 11 hours from Lulworth Cove, to Portland, to Weymouth. In total, the 11 members of the team who walked and their colleagues, who completed a static cycle within the home, raised £1,600 for Alzheimer’s Society to honour World Alzheimer’s Month, which takes place throughout September. It is the second year that the home’s team have completed their own 26-mile walking challenge to raise funds for the good cause.

Statistics shared by Alzheimer’s Society show that somebody develops Alzheimer’s every three minutes within the UK. They also report that one in three people born in the UK today will go on to develop dementia in their lifetime.

Ashley Smith, Home Manager at Maiden Castle House, said: “I’m incredibly proud of the whole team for their positive mindset and determination throughout such an extremely challenging walk. Alzheimer’s Society is such an important cause which does lifechanging work to support people living with dementia and their loved ones, so remembering who were fundraising for helped us to power through to the finish line.”

Maiden Castle House, which is run by not-for-profit charity, Care South, provides residential, respite, and dementia care. It has a dedicated activities team who organise a daily programme of events to bring residents together to socialise and build friendships.

Cat Medley, Alzheimer’s Society Regional Services Manager for South West England, said: “We are truly grateful to the Maiden Castle House team for completing Alzheimer’s Society’s Trek26 event and raising such an incredible amount. Dementia is the UK’s biggest killer. It will take a society to beat dementia, and this challenge shows what society in action looks like. Everyone who walks, donates or supports is working together to help end the devastation caused by dementia.”
