Derbyshire Care Home Resident Recognised for Raising More Than £27,000 for Ashgate Hospice
A resident at Dale Brook care home in Clay Cross has been honoured by Ashgate Hospice for her remarkable fundraising efforts over more than two decades, raising an incredible £27,808.85.
Alva de Chiro, 89, was recently presented with a commemorative cheque by Ashgate Hospice as a special recognition of her dedication to supporting the organisation over the last 20 years.
Alva’s fundraising journey began in 2001 and was inspired by her late husband, Biagio, who received care from Ashgate Hospice. By sharing personal stories about her life and recounting her husband’s experiences growing up in Italy, Alva captivated audiences at Women’s Institute meetings and community groups across the region.
Rather than charging for her engaging talks, Alva encouraged donations to Ashgate Hospice, with every contribution passed directly to the charity.
Leigh Allwood, Senior Community Relationship Fundraiser at Ashgate Hospice, said:
“Alva’s stories and life experiences have brought joy and laughter to so many people over the years. We wanted to reach out and thank her personally for her outstanding contribution and dedication to Ashgate Hospice through her amazing fundraising efforts.”
The surprise presentation took place at Dale Brook, where staff and family members joined in celebrating Alva’s achievement and lasting contribution to the charity.
Reflecting on the recognition, Alva said, “Throughout the years, I have really enjoyed going to fairs and communities to present my talks and raising money for Ashgate.
“When my friend came up with the cheque, I was lost for words. Overwhelmed, in fact, and I appreciated the love and support that was given at the time. I have loved every second of it.
“My advice to anyone who is thinking about raising money for charity is to go for it, embark on the path and do not look back. It’s the best feeling in the world and could make a huge difference.”
