Celebration Of Colour At Nursing Home BBQ

A Shropshire nursing home put on a BBQ with a difference for its residents last weekend.

Isle Court Nursing Home, in Bicton, Shrewsbury, brought a splash of colour to its stunning grounds to celebrate the sense of team spirit at the home.

Residents, family and friends were encouraged to wear a different colour depending on the location of their bedroom. A set of activities and challenges were laid out and they competed against one another to win points and the final trophy. Games included wooden horse racing, giant kerplunk and to finish, a staff race that involved extra-large feet.

As well as the activities, a delicious BBQ included the favourites, hot dogs and burgers and entertainment from the well-established Salopian Brass which residents thoroughly enjoyed, reminiscing some classic tunes.

The nursing home was extended last year taking it to a total of 80 beds, including an area specially designed for people living with dementia. It also includes two sensory Spa Rooms, with specialist massage bathing systems, and a Morris Café.

Debbie Rees, Social Life Coordinator, said: “The BBQ was a resounding success. The residents and their families really enjoyed something different. I am so pleased it all went to plan and everyone got involved, a great afternoon all round!”

As well as events like the BBQ, the home has a monthly activity schedule that includes a popular gardening club, cooking lessons, boxercise and day trips to Dobbies Gardening Centre and Whittington Castle in Oswestry.

Lydia Tyanase, Home Manager, also commented: “We want all of our residents to continue to enjoy every day activities and this includes being able to socialise with friends and family. We have a diverse range of activities planned and try to the local community as much as we can and welcome local choirs, speakers and entertainers.”
