Care Minister Position “Downgraded” In Reshuffle

NHS_608x376Responsibility for social care has been “downgraded” in a shake-up of Department of Health portfolios.

Warrington South MP David Mowat has been named parliamentary under secretary of state for community health and care, leading on adult social care, carers and community services.

Mr Mowat said: “I’m delighted and honoured to have been asked to join the Government and the new team at the Department of Health.

“There are huge challenges ahead, both for the NHS and our care services, as we deal with the effect of a population which is growing older.”

Mr Mowat takes on the role as parliamentary undersecretary, which is the lowest level of minister in government, after previously serving as Greg Clark’s parliamentary private secretary at the Department of Communities & Local Government.

The current move follows changes to the Department of Health’s senior structure month which removed a dedicated responsibility for local government and social care.
