Care Home Shores Up Funds With Seaside-Themed Summer Fair

Residents, staff, volunteers and friends from around the community came together to enjoy the Sandwood Care Home summer fair.

The summer fair had a seaside theme, and the day started with a reminiscence session led by All Around the Shire. Residents were able to recall their trips to the beach, favourite seaside destinations and, of course, the unpredictable British weather! Guests then engaged in a singalong to classic holiday tunes, including I do like to be beside the seaside, followed by a fish ’n’ chips lunch.

The afternoon saw visits to the many stalls set up, including guess the sweets in the jar, a cake stall, henna tattoos, a raffle, a tombola, and a special station where people could purchase art and crafts handmade by the residents. The event raised a total of £323.40, which will be put towards activities for the residents based on their suggestions.

Emma Cass, Activity Coordinator at Sandwood, said, “There was a great turn out and it was really lovely to see the community and families come together to support our home.

“Some of our residents helped run the stalls supported by members of the team. This gave them a sense of ownership and they are still talking about what a success it was.”

Resident Michael Baker, who ran the hook-a-duck stall, said, “Everyone was so excitable and well mannered. It was very thoughtful of everyone to give their time and we raised an amazing amount of money.”

The event rounded off with a cup of tea, a piece of cake and entertainment provided by singer Emma Kelsey, which even prompted some the residents to get up and dance.
Joanna Austin is the newly-appointed managed of the care home, and was given her first chance to experience the importance that Abbeyfield places on the local community and neighbourhood connections.

She said, “It is vitally important to keep the residents connected with the community and I am confident that, working together, we can achieve much more. We are so very grateful for all the donations and support we have received.”

Emma added, “Feedback has been so positive and we are already making plans for our Christmas fair!”
