Care Home Fulfils Wish For Dementia Resident To Be Involved In Community Arts At Bournemouth University
A local care home has fulfilled a resident’s dream to revisit their love for community art. Tom Marshall from Arts University Bournemouth was delighted to welcome Julia, who suffers from dementia and lives at Upton Bay care home in Hamworthy.
Julia a forma lecturer at Birmingham University studied History of Art and taught at both Birmingham and the Open University. Julia was thrilled when Karen, Activities Lead at Upton Bay announced the trip had been organised for her to tour the arts department at Bournemouth university.
Tom Marshall from AUB showed Julia around the various Art departments including visiting the Columbian Print and Albion Press Room, these two machines were used from 1883 and are still being used today. She also visited the Fine Arts Studio where Julia was introduced to Dr Richard Waring who showed her around the studio where 3rd year students were designing and painting their art getting ready for their degree entries.
Julia chatted students about their art and picked out some of the paintings she liked. She also got the opportunity to look around the AI department.
A wonderful achievement for Julia to demonstrate and talk about her profession when combatting such a difficult illness. Julia’s husband says “It was wonderful to see Julia becoming so animated again which we haven’t witnessed for years”.
Karen, Activity Lead, Upton Bay care home says:
“It was a pleasure to give Julia such an inspiring and fulfilling wish organising something that meant so much to her. It is so rewarding to watch a dementia resident engage so well with younger, likeminded students”.
